What Is Bamba Poa? Becoming a Safaricom Airtime Dealer in Kenya

Anyone who has topped up a friend's Safaricom line and gotten a small "thank you" in return has brushed against Kenya's oldest airtime-reselling trick. Bamba Poa is the real, official version of that — Safaricom's own dealer program that lets registered Retailers and DSAs buy airtime float at a discount and resell it at face value, keeping the difference.

How Bamba Poa actually works

Once registered, a Bamba Poa account holder dials *180# on the SIM that's registered to the account, selects "Top Up Subscriber," enters the recipient's number and amount, and confirms with their Bamba Poa PIN. Safaricom charges the account holder's own airtime/float balance at a discount off face value — the recipient receives the full amount, and the discount is the dealer's margin.

Retailer vs DSA — what's the difference?

• Retailer — tops up subscribers directly. This is the entry-level tier most small resellers register as.
• DSA (Direct Sales Agent) — sits above Retailers. A DSA can top up subscribers directly, and can also transfer float airtime onward to Retailers — effectively becoming a mini wholesaler within Safaricom's own network.

Each real Safaricom number can only hold one Bamba Poa registration, and Safaricom's own menu layout actually differs slightly between the two tiers — something worth knowing if you're ever dialing manually and the menu doesn't look like what you expected.

The manual way vs. the automated way

Most Bamba Poa dealers run their business the hard way: watching for M-Pesa payment SMS notifications one by one, then manually dialing *180# and typing the recipient, amount and PIN for every single sale. It works, but it doesn't scale past however many orders one person can type in a day — and a missed SMS is a missed sale.
